Met Office warns of more rain as floods close rail line

Flooding means trains are still not able to run on the line between Machynlleth and Newtown in Powys.

Replacement buses are in place, external until the end of Tuesday. The A487 at Dyfi Bridge has reopened following an earlier closure because of flooding.

A number of flood warnings and flood alerts are in place across Wales.

The weekend saw heavy rain across much of the country. There were two yellow "be prepared" weather warnings in place for Monday, external and Tuesday, external.

Monday's warning covered all of south, mid and west Wales and Wrexham from 15:00 BST to 23:59, with heavy rain expected to fall through the late afternoon and evening as it moved north east, putting some homes and businesses at risk of flooding.

Tuesday's warning runs from 06:00 BST to 20:00 and covers south, mid and west Wales.

Between 40-50mm (1.5-2in) of rain is possible in some places, along with lightning and hail in some areas.

An attempt to rescue about 20 cows which had become stranded by floodwater in a field in Abergwili, Carmarthenshire, had to be abandoned.

A farmer and a specialist fire crew from Mid and West Wales Fire Service had been using a boat but were unable to coax the animals back to dry land.

A high tide in the area was due at 20:20 BST and the animals have been driven to higher ground where they will be provided with feed.

It comes a day after the service rescued about 70 sheep from a flooded field in Trefnanney, Meifod, in Powys.

Firefighters used a service boat to ferry 10 sheep at a time across the water to safety.

Tuesday's weather warning covers a 14-hour period

Natural Resources Wales has issued eight flood warnings, external - urging people to take immediate action because flooding is expected.

These cover the Usk estuary and properties in Caerleon, Malpas Road and Uskmouth in Newport, and Tintern and Chepstow on the Wye estuary in Monmouthshire.

The A466 at Tintern was flooded due to a high tide.

Other places covered by the warnings include Kidwelly and Carmarthen in Carmarthenshire.
