In a statement, Mr Williams' family said: "David was a very loving and generous person who would go out of his way to help anyone he could.

"He was very well known in the dog showing community and he will be missed very much."

On Wednesday, detectives were carrying out door-to-door inquiries along Merthyr Road near the scene at Danygraig.

Police officers have also been checking wheelie bins along the road and searching the bank of the River Neath along High Street, near the Dinas Rock pub.

Det Supt Darren George from the force's major crime investigation team said: "I would like to thank the community of Glynneath for their support with this investigation so far."

He said the area where Mr Williams lived was popular with dog walkers and he was keen to hear from anyone who was in the Pontwalby area between 14:00 GMT and 20:00 on Monday.

"It may be that you believe you did not see anything which can help us but we would still ask you to please contact us if you were in the area at that time," he added.
