Police officer stabbed in Newport - man arrested for attempted murder

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a policeman was stabbed on duty in Newport.
Gwent Police said the 47-year-old sergeant suffered "wounds to the abdomen" but was in a stable condition at the Royal Gwent Hospital.
He had been called to an address on St Vincent Lane at 05:15 BST.
The arrested man, in his 30s and from Newport, has also been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
After the officers arrived at the scene they reported a fire, and firefighters were called to put out the blaze.
A 33-year-old PC was also taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
