Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident on Llangefni's Pencraig estate

A three-year-old girl has been airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car on Anglesey.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of several driving offences following the incident on Llangefni's Pencraig housing estate just before 17:00 BST on Sunday.

The child was flown to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool with serious head injuries.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Officers said the incident involved a black coloured Ford Focus, and the driver had left the scene on foot, before being arrested in Llangefni town centre shortly afterwards.

He was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, failing to stop, and driving without a licence or insurance. He has been released on bail pending further investigations.

Sgt Meurig Jones, from North Wales Police, said: "We are appealing for anybody who may have seen the car being driven prior to the collision, or to anybody who witnessed the incident itself and is yet to speak to us, to contact us immediately.

"The child remains in hospital in Liverpool however her injuries, thankfully, are not believed to be life threatening."
