A man has died in hospital after getting caught in a rip current off a Welsh beach.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was one of four people rescued from the sea by Holyhead Coastguard at Barmouth, Gwynedd, at about 13:30 BST on Sunday.

He was airlifted by Coastguard rescue helicopter to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, but died in hospital.

North Wales Police said he had been on holiday in the area and that the man's family had been informed.

Two other people were taken by ambulance to the same hospital.

Holyhead Coastguard said it had been dealing with multiple search and rescue incidents along the Welsh coast.

Abersoch Coastguard and RNLI rescue teams gave medical care to three people suffering hypothermia in a separate incident at Hell's Mouth.

And a man was rescued from the water at Aberdyfi in another incident involving three people at about 14:45.

He was given medical care at the scene before being airlifted to hospital.
