Covid-19: Number of students isolating quadruples in a week

Cardiff University says it currently has 1,983 students in isolation

The number of students told to isolate following Covid-19 cases at Cardiff University has quadrupled in a week.

On Thursday the university said 1,983 students were in isolation - up from 510 this time last week.

It also said a further 73 students had tested positive on Wednesday. Last week a total of 251 of its students tested positive for the virus.

Of those in isolation, 243 have reported symptoms and 1,287 are close contacts without symptoms.

Other universities have also reported case rises.

In the past week, Aberystwyth reported four more cases - a total of 35 since 4 September, University of South Wales said 21 students and four staff had tested positive with a total of 26 reported cases since 29 September, and Swansea University reported 73 current cases - 136 since start of term, with 451 students self-isolating.

Wrexham Glyndwr University reported positive tests for six students and three staff - a total of 11 since last month, and University of Wales Trinity St David reported cases in 10 students and four staff.

Cardiff Metropolitan reported three cases on 29 September.
