An investigation is beginning into the cause of a fire at a large hotel in mid Wales.

Emergency crews were called to the Metropole Hotel and Spa in Llandrindod Wells on Tuesday evening.

The fire, which began in the basement, affected the rear rooms of the six-storey hotel, which was unoccupied at the time.

No staff were injured and the hotel manager said in a social media post the damage had not been significant.

Dyfed Powys Police said they were called to the scene at about 18:40 BST on Tuesday.

"Officers assisted the fire service with crowd control and managing traffic diversions. Initial enquiries are ongoing," a spokesperson said.
