A three-year-old boy has died after an incident at a farm in Carmarthenshire.

Emergency services were called to the property near Efailwen at about 19:00 BST on Tuesday after reports a child had been hit by a farm vehicle.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed the boy had died at the scene.

The force said nobody else had been injured in the incident and an investigation had been launched into how it happened.

People living in the farming community told BBC Wales they were shocked and saddened by the incident.

Huw George said the community would try to help the family in any way they could

Local minister and county councillor Huw George said the community had woken up under "yet another cloud".

However he said people living in the area would do everything they could to support the family.

"One strong point of this community is that it's strong, it's close," he said.

"People will be there and sense when help is needed and if people ask for help, they will get it, because how do you begin to explain and begin to say something which means anything at a time like this."

'Terribly sad'

Carwyn James said people were struggling to come to terms with the sad news

Farmer and shop owner Carwyn James said everyone in the close-knit community was deeply affected by the news.

"People will fail to imagine the pain this poor family are going through at the moment," he said.

"It's an amazing place to raise children on a farm, but with it there are dangers. It's just so terribly sad."

In a statement, Dyfed-Powys Police said the three-year-old had died after being involved in a "collision with a vehicle" at the private address.

The child's family are being supported by specialist officers and the Health and Safety Executive and the Coroner have been informed, they added.

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed it had sent an ambulance and two rapid response vehicles to the incident, in the Efailwen area on Tuesday evening.
