A two-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after being hit by a police car in a 20mph zone.

Residents living in Ffordd Llanerch, in Pen-y-Cae, Wrexham, said he was walking with a woman and another child when he was struck on Friday afternoon.

"The mother was hysterical," said Vanessa Jones. "As I got there the little boy was trying to stand up."

The air ambulance landed at the scene, but the child was taken by road to Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

People living in the street described how they heard screams and a loud bang when the crash happened outside their homes at about 15:30 BST.

'I heard screams'

"I was upstairs doing some bits and bobs in the bedroom and I could hear some screams," said Ms Jones, 30.

She sat with the child as neighbour Hiram Evans, 55, took a pillow, blanket and teddy bear for the child as they waited with the officers for an ambulance.

"He was conscious all the time," Mr Evans said.

"The ambulance was on the scene straight away."

Appeal for witnesses

Some residents said they were unable to get into their homes for a time as a cordon and several police cars remained at the scene.

North Wales Police asked people to stay away from the area while officers investigated.

The force has appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch.
