A55 Britannia Bridge crash: Man, 52, dies at the scene

The A55 eastbound was closed for around nine hours - one of the westbound carriageways remains closed

A man, aged 52, has died in a crash on the A55 Britannia Bridge.

He was from Amlwch, Anglesey, and pronounced dead at the scene, while another driver is being treated at Ysbyty Gwynedd for serious injuries.

North Wales Police were called at 02:55 on Thursday to the crash involving two HGVs and two cars.

A local HGV driver, 38, is being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The bridge, which links the island of Anglesey with the mainland in Gwynedd, was shut in both directions. The eastbound carriageway and one of the westbound carriageways have been re-opened.

There were queues of traffic both on the mainland and on Anglesey

Traffic Wales said there were long delays in all directions around Bangor, Treborth, Llandygai and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll.

Traffic was queuing back to junction 7 on Anglesey and junction 11 in Gwynedd.

All drivers were advised to avoid the area if possible.

Sgt Jason Diamond, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family at this time.

"Our inquiries are under way and we are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the collision and who are yet to speak to us, or anybody who may have been travelling in the area and who may have dash cam footage to contact us."

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We sent three emergency ambulances, and crews were supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service and a duty operations manager. We also sent a BASICS responder and one air ambulance to the area. One person was taken by road to Ysbyty Gwynedd."
