There are five fewer independent councillors in Wrexham after the 2022 council election

There will be no overall control in Wrexham and Denbighshire as the Tories suffered losses in north-east Wales.

Independents have lost overall control of Wrexham- the town bidding for city and 2025 city of culture status.

The Conservatives had been part of an independent coalition in Denbighshire, but have plummeted from first to fourth as Labour emerged as the biggest party.

Recounting will finish in Flintshire on Saturday, but the county will be under no overall control.

Boris Johnson visited a caravan park near Rhyl in Denbighshire to drum up support during the campaign.

But some party representatives at the count blamed his government's problems in Westminster for the poor showing.

These results could give Labour a chance to form a new coalition at Denbighshire's county hall.

Meanwhile, Plaid has tripled its 2017 success with nine seats in Wrexham, while Labour gained three and the Conservatives down three.

The count in Flintshire will restart at 09:00 BST on Saturday, with four seats to be decided.

It's still early days in terms of results and local elections are complex so today's results won't give us a definitive picture of the national or UK picture.

Nevertheless, what happens in the key Conservative/Labour battleground in the north-east of Wales could have significant implications.

That's where the Welsh Conservatives routed Welsh Labour in the 2019 general election when Boris Johnson persuaded a lot of Labour voters to give him a try.

Tory sources are suggesting that the party is facing a "challenging" set of results in places such as Conwy and Denbighshire (where they have been running the councils in coalition with others).

If it looks like the party is losing voters' support, that could raise questions about Boris Johnson's ability to keep the 2019 cohort on board.

Where no party wins more than half the seats - known as "no overall control" - there may be talks lasting several weeks to decide who runs the authority.
