Newport: Voting in council elections is 'just not for me'

Wales' third largest city is just 13 miles (21 km) from the Senedd, Wales' political epicentre.

But Newport had a turnout of just 36.3% during the last council elections in 2017, which was the joint-lowest turnout of any local authority in Wales.

That means around two out of every three people didn't vote - but why?

Hayley Roberts, from the city's Repair Cafe, said people of the city "have become disengaged".

"The disconnect is through lack of understanding," added Danielle Rowlands, of Democracy Box.

"When you think about the Chartist history, you think about the democratic development of the UK, we've got a lot to shout about and be proud about."

Tyler Edwards has spoken to people in Newport to find out what they think about their city, what they know about the council elections and why so many don't vote.
