Cardiff: Thousands affected after water pipe bursts in city
- Published
Water supplies in Cardiff are expected to return overnight following major disruption after a pipe burst.
Nine schools were forced to close and businesses affected as Welsh Water made urgent repairs at a site in Ely.
On Thursday evening, the company said water had been restored to the "overwhelming majority" of properties and supplies were returning in Caerau.
It warned customers may notice discoloured water or low pressure as work continued overnight.
About 3,000 properties were initially affected in north-west Cardiff after problems arose on Thursday morning.
One person in Fairwater said some gardens in the suburb's Bwlch Road were 5ft (1.5m) under water.
But by 22:10 BST Welsh Water said it expected supplies would "return back to normal tonight".
It said: "Our team will continue to work overnight, but this will not impact on your water supplies, as we've taken extra measures to protect them during the day by moving water into the network from other areas."
K2 Coffee House, on High Street, Llandaff, was among those affected.
It said in a statement to customers: "Unfortunately we will have to remain closed until this is fixed as we are unable to wash and or use the toilet."
The cafe's owners said they were told the issue will be sorted soon.
Llandaff Cathedral said its facilities were available for those affected in north Cardiff.
Welsh Water workers were providing bottled water, available to vulnerable customers in Fairwater leisure centre.
Parents were informed at about 08:30 on Thursday morning that the following schools had been closed:
Ysgol Plasmawr
Mary Immaculate High School
Windsor Clive Primary School
Fairwater Primary School
Pentrebane Primary School
St Francis RC Primary School
Ysgol Gynradd Danescourt Primary School
Howell's School
The Cathedral School Llandaff
Windsor Clive Primary School, said it had been forced to cancel a school trip.
