The sale of two classic Ferraris is funding a new lifeboat destined to save lives off the Welsh coast.

A red 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB went under the hammer for £6.6m while a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 raised £1.93m.

They were sold in 2021 after being left to lifeboat charity the RNLI by classic car enthusiast Richard Colton, when he died in 2015.

The new all-weather lifeboat will work out of Barry Dock in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The vessel is currently being built in Poole, Dorset, and will arrive in Wales in spring 2024.

Lifeboat volunteers in Barry were told the news on Thursday.

Barry Dock lifeboat station coxswain, Andy Gavan, said it was an exciting time for the volunteers, having just moved to a new building.

"Welcoming a new lifeboat will be a new chapter in Barry Dock RNLI's longstanding history," he said.

The sale of the Ferraris has also funded a lifeboat and launch and recovery System in Hastings, East Sussex, and has contributed to new boathouses in London and Pwllheli, Gwynedd.

Barry Dock's new boat will be the second Shannon-class vessel funded by Mr Colton and will be named Richard and Caroline Colton II.
