Police later arrested a man who doused a Lidl worker in diesel

Terrified staff and customers at a south Wales supermarket were doused in diesel during a robbery.

The incident happened at about 17:15 GMT on Saturday at Lidl in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, said South Wales Police.

A man entered the store with a fuel container and poured the contents over a member of staff, escaping with £500 from the till.

A 54-year-old man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of robbery.

Det Sgt Tony Watts said: "This was an extremely frightening incident for staff and shoppers at the Lidl store.

"One man has been arrested and an investigation is continuing."

Several items have been recovered for forensic examination.
