Cardiff: Travellers refused christening party at pub

The Three Horseshoes settled a claim with an Irish Traveller dad after it refused to host his daughter's christening

An Irish Traveller dad has received compensation after a pub refused to host his daughter's christening.

The man, who cannot be named, was told by the venue in Whitchurch, Cardiff, it could not host the event because he was a member of the Traveller community. 

A claim for discrimination on the grounds of his race was made against the Three Horseshoes, Whitchurch.

The pub agreed to settle with the claimant, but it did not contain an admission of liability.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission supported the case and said the Three Horseshoes pub has committed to undertake equality and diversity training.

Its chairwoman, Baroness Kishwer Falkner, said businesses serving the public "should understand their responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 to protect their customers and staff from discrimination based on a protected characteristic".

The Three Horseshoes confirmed a claim was made, but said it related to a former employee of the pub and not the owner or any current member of staff.

It added that, despite this, all employees had undertaken equality and diversity training "to avoid any potential misunderstandings in the future".
