Plans for essential repairs to the M4 starting on Saturday have been cancelled.

Motorists were warned of disruption as part of the motorway around Newport would be closed over the next three weeks, said Traffic Wales.

Junction 26 was due to shut at 08:00 GMT on Saturday until Monday for joint repair work on the Malpas Viaduct.

The road is now scheduled close on Sunday at 06:00 and will reopen on Monday at 06:00.

Traffic Wales and the Welsh government apologised for any disruption, with work described as "safety-critical".

The motorway will then be closed westbound between junctions 26 and 25A Grove Park from 08:00 GMT on 17 February until 06:00 GMT on 19 February.

It will again be closed eastbound at Junction 26 from 08:00 GMT on 24 February until 06:00 GMT on 26 February.

There will also be three overnight closures between junctions 25A and 26 over the next two weeks. A Welsh government spokesperson said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused as these essential works are taking place."
