Radio Ceredigion stopped from cutting Welsh output

Media regulator Ofcom has refused a request by a radio station to cut its Welsh language output.

Town and Country Broadcasting (TCB) was seeking to change Radio Ceredigion's bilingual output, which is split almost equally.

But there was opposition to the proposals and a public consultation was launched.

TCB managing director Martin Mumford said his firm would now draw a line under the regulatory issues.

In May, Ofcom said Radio Ceredigion also wanted to reduce the amount of Welsh language music during the day from 20% to 10%.

Radio Ceredigion was taken over by TCB in April last year, and a studio in Aberystwyth closed.

Mr Mumford said about Ofcom's decision: "We made this request so we could spend less time on regulation and more time making compelling local radio.

"We're now drawing a line under these distracting regulatory issues to focus on confirming Radio Ceredigion as the county's number one local radio station."

Mr Mumford also announced that TCB had acquired the remaining 20% of Radio Ceredigion it did not own from Tindle Newspapers.
