Super-school plan for Lampeter's secondary and primary

Ceredigion Council will meet to discuss its plans in Lampeter on Tuesday

A primary and secondary school could merge to form a "super-school" as part of an ongoing shake-up of education in Ceredigion.

Ysgol Gynradd Gymunedol Ffynnonbedr and Ysgol Gyfun Gymunedol in Lampeter have been working together in a pilot, but it could be made permanent.

Plans are to educate pupils from three and 19 under one head teacher.

Ceredigion Council is also looking at creating a similar set-up in Llandysul and Tregaron.

Plans were unveiled last year to shut six primary schools in Llandysul and build a new "all-through" school. Similar proposals were announced in Tregaron, but they have been postponed.

The council has said previously that pupil costs and empty places has forced it to re-examine its education policy.

Earlier this year the local authority agreed to shut four primaries and build a replacement at Brynhoffnant, near Llandysul.

The plans in Lampeter will be discussed by the local authority on Tuesday.

The idea is to educate primary and secondary pupils in separate buildings, but they could share some resources.

A council report said: "The two schools have been working together as a 3-19 school as part of a pilot project during the 2010-11 academic year.

"During this time the pilot project was assessed by an independent team of consultants, Optima Learning."

However, the authority said if it received one objection then the decision to merge the schools would be referred to the Welsh government.

But if everything goes to plan the new super-school could open in September next year. A new name will also be given to the merged school.

A public meeting with staff, parents and governors was held on 29 September.
