Machynlleth recycling centre in Powys to close

Powys council is to close its recycling centre in Machynlleth to save money.

Half its waste came from Gwynedd and Ceredigion and the authority must provide value for money for taxpayers, members were told.

One councillor, Mike Williams, said it was not acceptable to close the Machynlleth centre and retain all others.

The council said the decision by its cabinet was final but has pledged to provide more recycling banks.

Mr Williams said he was shocked and stunned by the recommendation to close the centre, despite a huge response from people in Machynlleth, the Dyfi valley and the surrounding area to a consultation on the plans.

Councillor Gwilym Fychan reminded councillors that Machynlleth was at the centre of the Dyfi Valley biosphere, which is a site of ecological importance.
