Rediscovered: The Patagonian version of the Welsh anthem

A forgotten version of the Welsh national anthem, rewritten for expats starting a new life in Patagonia 140 years ago, has been rediscovered.

It was found in files about the Welsh colony in South America at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.

Jason Evans, who found it, said historians told him they were not aware of it but more checks were being made.

He said rousing lines describing things like "great" white mountains in the "new nation" were meant to inspire.

Mr Evans found it in a book, dated 1875, about the settlement which was founded 150 years ago while he was preparing for an exhibition to mark the anniversary.

"This is something that has not been sung for 100 years," he said.
