A lorry carrying chickens crashed into a river in Powys in the early hours of Tuesday.
The driver of the articulated lorry is at Glangwili General Hospital in a stable condition following the incident between Llandovery and Brecon just before 05:00 BST.
Mid and West Wales fire service said the vehicle left the A40 near Halfway and went down an embankment.
Police said the road was likely to be closed until late afternoon.
Natural Resources Wales said some of the chickens were killed in the crash.
A spokesman said the river had been checked and there was no environmental damage.
The local authority is now dealing with the welfare of the remaining chickens.
