Free transport will only be provided for children to their 'nearest suitable school'
Council leaders in Wrexham have voted to push ahead with a controversial new school transport policy.
Under the new scheme, transport would only be provided for children to "their nearest suitable school" from 2012.
Critics had urged a rethink, saying the changes would see out-of-county school transport cut.
But members of the executive board voted 6-4 to stick by their original decision.
It follows a move last month by councillors in Wrexham, who voted in favour of a motion calling on the council's executive board to reconsider the policy.
There is particular concern it will signal the end of free transport for pupils from Chirk who attend Dinas Bran secondary school in neighbouring Denbighshire.
The school has provided education for children from Chirk for up to 100 years.
Under the council policy the nearest school for parents with free transport will now be Ysgol Rhiwabon.
The changes will also affect pupils from the Llay area attending Ysgol Castell Alun at Hope, pupils from Marchwiel travelling to Maelor School in Penley and Ysgol Clywedog pupils who live in Wrexham's Caia Park.
