Wrexham council backs town centre free parking pilot

Plans to charge for on-street parking were dropped in July

Wrexham councillors have approved a pilot scheme to offer free parking in the town centre.

The trial will offer free parking after midday at the People's Market and Crescent Road car parks.

It is hoped the decision will encourage shoppers and visitors to the town centre to help boost trade.

The trial, which follows a decision to scrap on-street parking charges, was described as "excellent news" by council leader Ron Davies.

Mr Davies added: "Officers are also looking at a range of other matters to improve access to the town centre which will be presented to Environment and Scrutiny Committee in November."

The pilot will begin on 31 October, and its progress will be discussed within 12 months.

Those using the car parks will have to obtain a ticket, but no charges will apply.

A report revealed the car parks are "operating under the council's 85% desired occupancy and that the opportunity now exists to encourage greater usage by offering them free after 12 noon".

Cllr David Bithell, deputy leader, said: "We have met with traders in the town centre and have listened to their concerns for their businesses during these difficult economic times.

"We hope the move will be welcomed by businesses, visitors and shoppers who will all benefit from free parking in the town centre."

In July, proposals to charge for on-street parking were dropped after opposition from local traders.
