Work has started on a network to deliver "super-fast" broadband to 15,000 homes and businesses in Wrexham.

BT began to lay fibre broadband in the north of the county and Gresford on Tuesday.

It said the work will take the number of homes and businesses in Wales with access to the network to 300,000.

It said the new network will give download speeds of up to 40Mbps, although it plans to nearly double speeds next year.

Openreach, BT's local network business, is due to make super-fast fibre broadband available to two-thirds of UK homes and businesses by the end of 2015.

Lesley Griffiths, AM for Wrexham, said: "This represents a significant investment in the communications infrastructure of Wrexham north and Gresford, and is welcome news for residents and businesses there."
