Plas Madoc: Miriam Beard bailed to psychiatric unit

A former co-ordinator of the Plas Madoc Communities First Project in Wrexham, who defrauded the charity out of £51,000, has been remanded on bail to a psychiatric unit.

Miriam Beard was taken from Mold Crown Court to hospital on Friday after a judge heard she had taken some tablets.

She was bailed to Wrexham Maelor hospital's psychiatric unit, where her condition will be reviewed.

She is due to be sentenced in December after admitting nine fraud charges.

At Mold Crown Court, Judge Rhys Rowlands bailed Beard until Tuesday, when the court is expected to be given more details, following a psychiatrist's report.

Beard, 55, from Henllan, Denbighshire, was accompanied by a psychiatric nurse in court.

Her barrister, Russell Davies, said his client had been treated at the unit.

Beard admitted nine charges part-way through her trial last week and her son Darrell Kelly, 35, of Greater Manchester, has admitted six charges.

The prosecution claims Beard was using the assets of the charity for her own ends.
