Council bids to demolish Rhyl's former Honey Club

A big council-run regeneration project is under way at Rhyl

Emergency action to demolish a former seaside nightclub because of safety fears is being sought by Denbighshire council officials.

They are concerned about the risk of falling debris or even the collapse of the former Honey Club in Rhyl.

Part of Water Street and Crescent Road was closed amid safety concerns during bad weather in January.

Officials need Welsh government permission to go ahead with demolition because it is in a conservation area.

Denbighshire council took over the building in early 2011 as part of itsredevelopment plansfor the resort.

In December, the council announced plans to earmark £10m to a project to buy up rundown properties in the town as part of a big regeneration.

Demolition has already began between Gronant Street and Aquarium Street.

Bethan Jones, council director corporate governance and efficiency, said the authority recognised that the continued road closures have been causing disruption.

"We have written to the Welsh government asking if there is an emergency route to demolition and we are currently awaiting a response to this," she said.

The former club has been empty for a number years.
