Margaret Hughes always had a lovely word for people, says a neighbour

The funeral of a woman who died in the floods in Denbighshire last month that forced more than 1,000 people from their homes has taken place.

Margaret Hughes, 91, was found drowned in her flooded home at St Asaph after the River Elwy burst its banks.

The service was held at the Church of St Asaph and St Kentigern on Friday.

Mrs Hughes's family described her as very active and "strong willed with a real sense of humour and fun".

Hundreds of houses in St Asaph were deluged when the Elwy burst its banks on the night of Monday 26 November.

Emergency services checking properties the following day found the body of Mrs Hughes at her home.

An inquest into her death has been opened and adjourned to a later date by John Gittins, the acting coroner for north Wales central.

A post-mortem examination gave a provisional cause of her death as drowning.

Mrs Hughes spent most of her early life working on farms, first in Cerrig, near Corwen, and then St Asaph where she had farmed with her husband for 18 years.

Speaking after her death, neighbour Mandy Williams said: "She always had a lovely word to say to people."
