Ruthin primary schools face closure in consultation

The future of 11 schools in Ruthin will go out to formal consultation, Denbighshire council has announced.

The cabinet will ask the views of parents and other people affected by primary school provision in the area.

They will also be asked to give their thoughts on a set of proposals suggested following an informal consultation earlier this year.

Up to three schools could close with two remaining as a new single school on the same sites.

The future of four more is also still uncertain.

The formal consultation will be held between 9 September and 18 October 2013.

The current proposals include:

  • Closing Ysgol Clocaenog and Ysgol Cyffylliog on 31 August 2014, merging them as a new area school to be opened on 1 September 2014 on the existing sites with a view to building a new school in the future

  • Closing Ysgol Llanbedr on the 31 August 2014, with pupils transferring to Ysgol Borthyn, subject to parental preference

  • The governing bodies of Ysgol Pentrecelyn and Ysgol Llanfair DC form a federation to be in place no later than 1 September 2014

  • A detailed feasibility study before any formal recommendation for Rhos Street School, Ysgol Borthyn, Ysgol Penbarras and Ysgol Rhewl

  • Keep the federated governing body of Ysgol Bryn Clwyd and Ysgol Gellifor, subject to exploring the future language category of Ysgol Bryn Clwyd and the balance of pupils at both schools

  • Ysgol Bro Famau remains with a review of its use of space on both sites

Eryl Williams, lead member for education at Denbighshire council, said: "We were delighted with the response to the informal consultation earlier this year.

"It really gave us a feel for what parents, teachers and other stakeholders felt about their schools, the standard of education and what the future could hold.

"We now have a good idea on how best to move forward, and want to make sure that all interested parties share our view.

"These proposals could lead to a clear vision for future investment in a number of Ruthin schools and will strengthen education in the Ruthin area."
