Controversial plans to build more homes on the former Brymbo steelworks site in Wrexham have been given outline planning approval by councillors.

Brymbo Developments Ltd wanted permission to build homes and retail units on land at Tanyfron.

However many people in the local community oppose the plans, claiming the area is over-populated.

Councillors were recommended to grant the proposal, subject to a long list of conditions.

The report, external, discussed on Monday, said the community council opposes the development for a variety of reasons, including that "this is not just a development, this is becoming another village".

Other objections included that "the plot is in green barrier land and should be protected against further building".

The report recommended that the developers should commit to building a new spine road before - subject to conditions - outline planning is granted.

The old Brymbo steelworks closed in 1990, and nearly 600 homes have already been built on the site since 2006.
