Bryn Terfel to headline Llangollen Music Eisteddfod

Opera star Bryn Terfel will headline the 2014 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

The bass baritone will play the lead role in a special production of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Classical composer Karl Jenkins will also showcase his new work and Dutch jazz singer Caro Emerald will make her Llangollen debut.

The festival will show Sweeney Todd when it begins in July.

It will also showcase international talent will be showcased at the Carnival of Nations.

Acts including Cirque du Soleil's Bruce Bilodeau, Britain's Got Talent winners Spelbound and acrobats from the Chinese State Circus will take part.

It will also include the festival's official opening ceremony and the Procession of Nations into the Pavilion.

The following night will see the return of Karl Jenkins, one of the highest selling classical composers.

He will present the world premiere of his latest masterpiece, Adiemus Colores.

Multi-award winning Dutch jazz singer Caro Emerald will also take part in the festival.

Meanwhile, the Cape Town Opera will perform alongside Wales' representative in Cardiff Singer of the World, Gary Griffiths during the week-long event.

They will be joined by the Wales Millennium Centre's Only Kids Aloud Chorus and the orchestra, British Sinfonietta.

Singers from a range of categories will compete for The Pavarotti Trophy and a cash prize of £3,500 in The Choir of the World competition on the Saturday night of the week-long festival.

There will also be a contest to find the dance champions of 2014.

Bryn Terfel said he was "absolutely thrilled" to be taking part.

"I'm a proud Welshman and the International Eisteddfod is unique, the atmosphere, the colour, the audience, even the flowers, it really is a very, very special event, " he said.

Musical director Eilir Owen Griffiths said he was "really excited" about the line-up for next year and was sure they would prove to be a big hit with audiences.
