Wrexham Racecourse roof damaged by high winds

A small amount of debris blew from the Racecourse roof on Wednesday evening

Storm-force winds have ripped off small parts of the roof at Wrexham's Racecourse stadium, say council officers.

The Mold Road route into the town was closed as a precaution from Crispin Lane to the Plas Coch roundabout.

Earlier on Tuesday, a planned evening match against Hereford was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

A number of roads across north-east Wales were also closed.

Highways officials have closed Flintshire Bridge at Deeside due to concerns, and also on the A483 in both directions between Ruabon and Chirk.

A flood warning was in force for the Lower Dee Valley, from Llangollen to Wrexham.

Wrexham council issued a statement saying the strong winds could also affect the county borough up to about 22:00 GMT on Thursday.

Council officials said on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon that Mold Road would remain closed until Thursday morning "due to debris from the Racecourse roof".

Road closures

In Flintshire, the A5104 was closed between the A541 and the B5101, an area known locally as 'The Nant'.

In Denbighshire, the A547 Rhuddlan-Prestatyn road was partially blocked due to flooding near B5119 Waterfall Road, Dyserth.

North Wales Police have urged the public not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Ch Insp Darren Wareing said: "The weather is set to get worse over the next few hours and conditions are becoming treacherous.

"We are advising everyone to stay indoors wherever possible as roads are becoming impassable both in coastal areas and inland due to falling trees and debris."

Across north Wales, thousands of homes were without power as winds brought down trees and power lines.

At Aberdaron on the Llyn Peninsula the gusts hit 108 mph.
