New flood defences agreed for Ruthin's Glasdir estate

Work to improve flood defences which failed to protect homes on a new estate in Denbighshire has been given the go-ahead.

More than 120 homes were hit in November 2012 as the Glasdir estate in Ruthin was still being built.

Despite the homes being put on a flood plain, residents said they had been told that defences meant there was little prospect of properties flooding.

Denbighshire council said it needs more dry weather before work can start.

Natural Resources Wales has given approval to the council to protect housing with a 90cm (2.95ft) high wall.

The council said it planned to finish the project as quickly as possible, but after the wet winter it needed a period of dry weather to allow the work to start.

"The residents have been eager for work to protect their homes to get under way for months now," said Darren Millar, Clwyd West AM.

"I look forward to seeing the works completed as soon as possible so that those living on the estate can have the flood protection they deserve."
