A new primary and secondary school are to be built in Flintshire as part of a shake-up in education in the county.

The proposals, agreed by councillors this week, will see Holywell High School demolished and replaced with a new building.

Pupils currently at Ysgol Y Fron and Ysgol Perth Y Terfyn will move to a new 315-pupil primary school to be built at the site.

The plan aims to cut the number of vacant places and reduce costs.

New playing fields and a sports hall, which will be open for community use, will also be built at the site.

School reorganisation plans were first discussed in 2012 after Flintshire council found three high schools - Holywell, Elfed in Buckley and John Summers in Queensferry - had more 25% surplus spaces.

Options to merge Argoed High, in Mynydd Isa, with Elfed High and consolidate Deeside's John Summers High with Connah's Quay High were dropped following parent protests.
