Unison wants Glan Clwyd Hospital maternity unit rethink

A union wants a health board to rethink its suspension of maternity consultant care at a north Wales hospital.

Unison is asking Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to look at alternatives to halting the service at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

Mothers-to-be in the area will have to travel to Gwynedd or Wrexham if they get into difficulties during labour.

Unison regional organiser Donna Hutton said there are concerns about the strain it will put on these hospitals.

Suspension of consultant care at the hospital in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire, is in place for 18 months while staffing issues are addressed.

Board chairman Dr Peter Higson told a board meeting that the service is safe but there is a worry that it is not sustainable.
