A multi-million pound investment in a Denbighshire seafront will "create a better town", a council boss has said.

The formal go-ahead has been given to redevelop a 9.9 acre (four hectare) site in Rhyl, including a 73-bedroom hotel, two restaurants and an extension to the Pavilion Theatre.

Denbighshire council leader Hugh Evans said plans for the "significant development" were gathering pace.

The 73m (240ft) tall tower on the promenade was last used at the end of the 2010 summer season, providing panoramic views from the top.

The former Sun Centre is being demolished as part of the redevelopment after Denbighshire's planning committee backed the plans at meeting on Wednesday.

Outline planning permission was also granted for an exhibition at the theatre.

Mr Evans said: "Developments and improvements to the promenade will not only benefit Rhyl's economy through increased footfall from visitors, but are also creating something to be enjoyed by residents of Rhyl, Denbighshire and wider north Wales communities.

"We're investing to create a better town with a better quality and more enjoyable offer for everyone who lives, visits or does business in Rhyl."
