Never to be forgotten: Wayne Hughes shows his tattoo with the date and numbers of his lottery win

A lottery millionaire has celebrated with a tattoo showing the day he struck lucky and his winning numbers.

The tattoo on 34-year-old shop worker Wayne Hughes's arm says: "Sat 7th Aug 2010" and "13, 16, 22, 25, 31, 39".

He now plans to study IT in university, but might change to part-time work at Wilkinson's store in Holyhead, Anglesey, after landing £1.1m.

"I'm going to be careful with it, and I'm not going to be flash with cash as I've never had any," he said.

After the draw on Saturday he spent a sleepless night, with the winning ticket hidden in an old CD box, until he could ring National Lottery company Camelot.

He has always used numbers from the birthdays of family and friends, and on Thursday, the day before his good luck was publicly revealed, he visited a tattoo parlour in Holyhead to get the winning date and numbers eteched on his arm.

Mr Hughes had always wanted to do a college course in IT after leaving school at 16, and he said the money would now allow him to follow his dream.

He has worked at Wilkinson's store for three years, and said he wanted to carry on because he enjoyed the job and liked his colleagues. The Liverpool FC supporter's other plans include a holiday and buying a house.

'So surreal'

"I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet as I need to get my head around it all," he told a press conference in Bangor.

"It's all so surreal I still don't believe it. When my mum rang I checked and double checked it," he said.

"I don't think I'll change because I am quite a grounded person," he said.

"I've told a handful of people up to now, and they were happy for me, although some were a little jealous," he said.

The youngest of five children, Mr Hughes said he had to keep pinching himself about the win.
