Harlech pool finally given to campaigners

A community company set up to save Harlech swimming pool from closure three years ago is finally being handed the keys.

Harlech and Ardudwy Leisure was set up after a huge community effort to save the pool when Gwynedd council said it would have to close to save money.

A company spokesman said it was "a bit of a miracle in these economic times".

Gwynedd council said what had been achieved in Harlech would serve as a model for other community initiatives.

"We are very pleased that this day has arrived," said Arthur Coleman from Harlech and Ardudwy Leisure.

"From start to finish it has taken us three years to reach this stage.

"It was done by the community, for the community, and it is now up to that community to make sure its a success," he added.

Mr Coleman said the company wanted to thank a "lot of people" who had helped the community over that time.

"It was a huge effort by everyone," he added.

The only down side was the timing, he said.

"It's not been made easier by use having to take it over in the middle of winter because of a delay in grants," he added.

Gwynedd council leader, councillor Dyfed Edwards, said he was delighted the keys was being handed over.

"The people of Harlech told us that they wanted to see this facility remain open and I am delighted that all the hard work and perseverance has finally paid off am delighted that all the hard work and perseverance has finally paid off," he said.

"The success of this project shows what can be achieved when local people, Gwynedd council and the Welsh Assembly Government work together to find new solutions to the challenges that we face," he added.

Mr Edwards said what had been achieved would serve "as a model for other community initiatives across Wales".
