An 11-year-old boy has been killed after falling off a zip wire ride at a forest theme park in Snowdonia.

Police were called to the incident at the Greenwood Forest Park centre at 1640 BST on Sunday.

The boy, who has not yet been named, was airlifted to hospital where he later died. The park said safety kit had been checked earlier in the day.

North Wales Police and the Health and Safety Executive will both be investigating what happened.

Steve Williams, operations manager at the theme park, said: "I can confirm that an 11-year-old boy has very sadly passed away.

"The Health and Safety Executive have been informed and will be carrying out an investigation, as will we."

He added: "All the safety kit was examined at 10am this morning in line with our safety procedure. All was in order."

Mr Williams said the zip wire ride operated at a height of up to 30ft (9 metres).

According to the theme park's website the SwampFlyer ride is the longest zip wire in Wales, spanning 145 metres (475ft) across a wooded valley.
