Walker from Wirral, 47, dies on Snowdon

A walker who died after collapsing on Snowdon has been named.

David Cretney, 47, who was from the Wirral, died of natural causes, said North Wales Police.

A rescue operation was launched just below the 3,560ft (1,085m) summit on Saturday afternoon.

The crew of an RAF rescue helicopter tried to resuscitate Mr Cretney as he was flown to hospital in Bangor, only a few minutes away.

But a spokesman at Ysbyty Gwynedd later confirmed that he had died.

The Sea King, based at RAF Valley in Anglesey, flew 10ft (3m) above the Watkin Path, which leads to the summit.

Despite cloud limiting visibility to 20 yards (18m), the crew performed a "hover taxi" to reach the walker.

Although the helicopter took only 10 minutes to reach him, rescue crews were unable to save the man.
