Environment Agency wants Llangefni biomass plant views

Local people are being asked for their views on plans for a biomass plant at the former Peboc site in Llangefni, Anglesey.

Eco Environment Resources UK Ltd wants to burn waste wood, animal fat, and vegetable oil to generate electricity and heat to produce wood pellets.

The Environment Agency is staging an opportunity to view and comment on the plans in Llangefni on Tuesday.

Plans for a £100m biomass plant for the site were put first forward in 2009.

A biomass plant cannot operate without an environmental permit and the agency spokesman said there would be an in-depth investigation to see if the proposals conform with all the relevant national and international guidelines.

The agency will only grant the permit if it is satisfied the development "will not harm the health of people or damage the environment".

"We will be investigating what impact the proposals will have on air quality and the health of local people," said David Edwell, the north Wales area manager for Environment Agency Wales.

He said the agency was keen to involve the local community as much as possible.

"The drop-in session will give local people an opportunity to find out about the permitting process and view the application.

"Our officers will also explain how people can make their views known as part of the formal consultation."

Copies of the application can be seen at the Environment Agency Wales offices at Parc Menai, Bangor and the Anglesey council offices in Llangefni.

The drop-in session will be held on 8 November at the Communities First Building, Bridge Street, Llangefni, from 16:00 - 20:00 GMT.
