London 2012: Torchbearer Ilid Roberts one of 212 lucky youngsters

Ilid Roberts is one of just 212 youngsters who will be carrying the Olympic flame during the torch relay.

The Ysgol Y Creuddyn pupil from Llandudno was selected as part of London 2012's Get Set Education programme.

Schools involved were invited to put forward a nomination for anyone who would be 12-years-old at the time of the relay and worthy of a place.

And Welsh-speaker Ilid has been picked to take part during the Llandudno stage of the relay which is touring Wales from 25-30 May.

"I feel really happy about it," she said.

"I put my name down to do it when they asked for nominations but I didn't think I would get picked.

"It's going to be exciting. My friends and family are really happy for me."

Year 7 pupil Ilid is described as "by far our star in this very talented year group" in her successful nomination put forward by the school.

Sport has a great influence on her life and her main activity is swimming. Ilid has been selected for the regional development squad.

"Her enthusiasm is infectious to both pupils and staff, and she compliments this excellent attitude with her natural sporting talent," her school said.

"Ilid consistently performs to a high standard in all curricular activities displaying a wide range of skills and is a vital contributor to our extra-curricular provision having represented the school at netball, cross country and athletics.

"Her dedication to improving personal performance manifests itself in her committed attitude to training and skills development."
