Two divers rescued from Dorothea quarry in the Nantlle valley

Two divers have been rescued after getting into difficulties at Dorothea Quarry in Gwynedd, say coastguards.

The men were transferred by an RAF rescue helicopter to the Murrayfield hyperbaric unit on the Wirral for treatment for suspected bends.

The helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey and an air ambulance were both sent to the scene. Two paramedics stabilised the men before the transfer.

Holyhead Coastguard were alerted to the emergency at 12:22 GMT.

A spokesman said the rescue was co-ordinated by North Wales Police.

Llandwrog coastguard team assisted at the helicopter landing site, the spokesman added.

The flooded quarry in the Nantlle valley has become a popular site with divers since it ended operations in the 1970s.

There have been about 20 deaths there since 1990.
