Voters on Anglesey are going to the polls to elect a new council for the island, a year after local elections in the rest of Wales.

A total of 106 candidates are fighting to represent 30 seats, after the vote was delayed to allow commissioners to run the authority.

There have been major changes to boundaries on the island, with 11 new multi-member wards.

Polls open at 07:00 BST and close at 22:00. Votes will be counted on Friday.

Changes under the boundary review see the number of elected councillors on Anglesey cut from 40 to 30.

Commissioners were appointed by the Welsh government to run the local authority following an auditor general's report on the council in March 2011.

It recommended a programme of "democratic renewal" and a review of electoral arrangements at the troubled authority following a failure of political leadership.

A small number of the 40 town and community councils on Anglesey will also be holding elections on Thursday.

Counting of the votes will begin at 09:30 BST on Friday.

Elections are also being held in 27 English county councils and seven unitary authorities, last contested in 2009,
