Surf Snowdonia wave centre go ahead at Dolgarrog aluminium site

The surfing lake could be open by the summer of 2014 with all facilities open the following year

A multi-million pound surf attraction and "wave garden" in the Conwy Valley has been backed by councillors.

The attraction, including a wakeboard lake, at a former aluminium factory site at Dolgarrog can go ahead providing planning conditions are met.

The Surf Snowdonia project could create 135 jobs during construction with about 60 jobs after that, according to a report to Conwy councillors.

The surfing lake could be open by the summer of 2014.

The plans include a "wave garden" with lagoons, water slide, a wakeboard lake, lodges, restaurant, retail and play facilities along with a main car park for up to 250 spaces.

Conwy Adventure Leisure submitted the planning application after holding a public consultation earlier this year.

Planning permission was given the go ahead, with provisions including a further noise assessment.

Dolgarrog Aluminium, which employed 170 people, closed in 2007 and an action group was set up to develop the site.
