A 21-year-old man has fallen to his death on Snowdon, say North Wales Police.

The alarm was raised shortly after 17:00 BST on Friday when police were told a man had fallen close to the summit.

Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and a rescue helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey were scrambled to the scene.

A police spokesman said the man died "despite the best efforts of those involved".

The man and a friend were making their way down from the summit when they took a wrong turn down a steep grassy slope.

It is understood they had tried to turn back when the man fell 500ft (152m) down a cliff.

Walkers heard his friend's calls for help and alerted rescue teams, who winched him to safety using the helicopter.
