Developers behind a bid to build a £850m tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay are hoping to create a similar scheme off the Conwy coast.

Tidal Lagoon Power said plans for the project off Colwyn Bay are in the early stages.

However, it is one of five sites across the UK which the company is considering for its next project.

It has said the Swansea scheme could meet 10% of the UK's electricity needs from the tides.

"We remain very encouraged by the enthusiastic support shown to date by local people and very much hope that this will be one of the five full-scale tidal lagoons that we go on to develop after Swansea Bay," a company spokesman said.

The lagoon in Swansea could provide power for 120,000 homes for 120 years, the company has said.

The six-mile-long U-shaped seawall will go from the docks to near Swansea University's new Fabian Way campus.

It would take two years to build and create 1,850 construction jobs.
