Martin Williams could have slipped on wet grass, the inquest heard

A 23-year-old man who had taken ecstasy fell to his death off a north Wales cliff after going stargazing, an inquest has heard.

Martin Williams, of Llandudno, may have slipped on wet grass on Great Orme headland before falling 50m (164ft).

He was wearing boots with virtually no grip on the soles and the drug could have affected his judgement, assistant coroner Nicola Jones said.

She recorded a conclusion of accidental death.

'Keen stargazer'

A paramedic certified Mr Williams dead at the scene. Some small rocks were found nearby.

Det Insp Tim Bird, a member of Ogwen Valley mountain rescue team who was one of several climbers who investigated the incident, said: "It would have been very slippery on the wet grass on the top."

The inquest heard that Mr Williams, who was manager of the restaurant at Venue Cymru, was a keen stargazer and was looking forward to receiving a telescope for Christmas.
