France coach crash drivers face Express Motors probe

The coach had 42 students, six staff and two drivers on board

The two drivers of a Gwynedd coach which crashed in eastern France seriously injuring two teenagers will be quizzed by their bosses on Thursday.

They have returned to Wales following Saturday's crash when it went into a ditch on the A39 motorway at Lons-le-Saunier, near the Swiss border.

The coach was carrying school children from Gloucestershire to Italy.

Penygroes-based Express Motors said it will launch its own investigation while prosecutors in France continue theirs.

The driver behind the wheel at the time of the crash told investigators he came off the road while looking for his sunglasses.

The French authorities are investigating whether the driver fell asleep

But prosecutors said his explanation was not very convincing and believe the driver, who is now being formally investigated, fell asleep at the wheel.

Police said no other vehicles were involved. No charges have been brought.

The coach was carrying 42 students - aged between 14 and 18 - and six staff from Bournside School in Cheltenham for their camping trip.

Two seriously injured teenagers remain in hospital in Besancon. The school's website said they were making "good progress" and it hoped they would return to the UK in the next couple of days.

The other pupils have all come home.
