Theatre founder Wilbert Lloyd Roberts sculpture unveiled

A sculpture commissioned in memory of one of the founders of Welsh language theatre in Wales has been unveiled in Bangor, Gwynedd.

Former BBC drama producer Wilbert Lloyd Roberts helped establish the reputation of Cwmni Theatr Cymru and later Theatr Cymru in the 1960s and early 70s.

He then went on to help found Theatr Gwynedd and became its first director.

His sculpture was unveiled at Bangor University's Pontio centre, which stands on the site of Theatr Gwynedd.

"I am so proud to have been commissioned to do the portrait of Wilbert, who had such an amazing influence culturally in Wales," said artist Nick Elphick, who created the piece at his studio in Llandudno, Conwy.

The sculpture was unveiled on Sunday evening by Cefin Roberts, chairman of the appeal, Elen ap Robert, artistic director of Pontio, and Ann Llwyd and Elin Roberts-Puw, Wilbert Lloyd Roberts' daughters.

"I would like to thank each and every person who contributed to the fund from all across Wales. It is these contributions that have secured this permanent memorial at Pontio, and for that I am truly thankful," Ms Llwyd said.
